introductonary note

restoration of japanese and chinese scroll paintings in the santazudou

a scroll painting, even a well mounted and carefully stored one, lasts more or less a mans lifetime. like a human face it collects its scars, wrinkles and shows signs of a worn out body.

but such an old scroll could be restored.

new paper brings back the strength and light in to the artwork. careful cleaning can remove the haze, pollution and open fire of centuries has laid over the ideas of the painters. tears could be healed. creases could be removed.

this is a highly satisfying work.

we try to preserve as much as possible of old quality. We collect materials to replace the missing and develop methods to treat the individual problems of each scroll.
