Normally we will not see the brushwork behind the effect and a whole part of the surface is shaded with colour or ink.

The background is here darkened with a sand coloured layer, to strengthen the contrast at the top of the holy mountain. The ink shade in the hill side with its different grades of ink is establishing the vastness of the mountain and depth toward the background. The effect is further enhanced by the patch of unpainted silk that creates the impression of a cloud stretching around the shoulder of Mount Fuji.
